Perimenopause and Entrepreneurship: The Conversation No One Is Having

Your body is changing, your energy is shifting, and your business demands the same output. Here's the conversation about perimenopause and business that needs to happen.

Let's talk about something nobody in the business world wants to talk about: perimenopause and entrepreneurship.

I'm going to go first, because someone has to. And because I've lived it — I'm living it — and I know I'm not the only woman entrepreneur who has been silently navigating this while trying to maintain the same output she had at 30.

    The Silent Struggle

Here's what nobody tells you about perimenopause and business: it's not just hot flashes. It's brain fog that makes you question your competence. It's energy crashes that hit mid-afternoon when you have client calls. It's mood swings that make you wonder if you're losing your mind. It's sleep disruption that means you're running on fumes.

And while all of this is happening, your business expects the same output. Your clients expect the same energy. Your team expects the same leadership. And you expect the same from yourself.

So you push through. You caffeinate. You white-knuckle your way through the days. And you tell no one, because talking about hormones in a business context feels unprofessional.

Why We Need to Talk About This

I'm done being quiet about this. Here's why: the silence is costing women their health, their businesses, and their peace.

When we don't talk about perimenopause in business, women who are struggling think something is wrong with them. They think they're losing their edge. They think they need to push harder. They don't realize that their body is going through a massive transition and they need to adjust — not push.

The conversation isn't about making excuses. It's about making adjustments. There's a difference.

    What I've Learned

I'm not a doctor. I'm a coach who is living this. Here's what I've learned about navigating perimenopause while running a business:

    1. Your energy architecture has changed

The energy system that worked in your 30s may not work in your 40s. That's not failure — that's biology. I had to completely redesign my workday around my energy patterns. My most productive time shifted. My capacity for back-to-back meetings decreased. And fighting that reality was making me miserable.

    2. Brain fog is real, and it's temporary

The brain fog of perimenopause is terrifying when you don't know what it is. You think you're losing your cognitive edge. You're not. It's hormonal, and there are things that help. For me, it was adjusting my schedule, supporting my body, and — critically — not panicking about it.

    3. Rest is not laziness

This one was hard for me. In my 30s, I could push through tired. In perimenopause, pushing through tired makes everything worse. Rest became non-negotiable, and I had to unlearn the story that resting meant I was lazy.

    4. You need a different kind of support

The business strategies that worked at 30 may not work at 45. The coaching that helped you hustle may not help you now. You need support that accounts for the whole woman — body, mind, spirit, hormones, and business.

    The Adjustments That Changed Everything

    I didn't overhaul my business. I made micro-adjustments:

    • I shifted my deep work to mornings when my brain is clearest.
    • I built rest into my calendar like a non-negotiable meeting.
    • I reduced my meeting load and batched calls to protect my energy.
    • I got honest with my team about what I was navigating — not as an excuse, as context.
    • I started supporting my body with the same intention I support my business.

These weren't big changes. They were micro-habits. But they added up to a sustainable way of working that honors where I am instead of demanding I be where I used to be.

You Are Not Losing Your Edge

If you're a woman entrepreneur in perimenopause and you feel like you're losing your edge, hear me: you are not losing your edge. You are in a transition. And transitions require adjustment, not willpower.

The women I coach through this season don't come out diminished. They come out different — more attuned to their bodies, more intentional about their energy, more grounded in their worth. They build businesses that work with their bodies instead of against them.

That's not a downgrade. That's an upgrade. It just doesn't feel like one when you're in the middle of it.

This is the conversation no one is having. I'm having it now. And if you need someone to help you navigate it, that's part of what I do. If burnout is creeping in, read The Burnout Recovery Plan for High-Achieving Women.
