How to Hear God's Voice When Making Business Decisions

One of the hardest things about running a business isn't the strategy. It's the decisions. Should I launch this program? Should I hire this person? Should I walk away from this opportunity that looks good but doesn't feel right?

For years, I treated business decisions like they were purely logical exercises. Make a pros and cons list. Consult a mentor. Look at the data. Decide.

All of that is good. But it's incomplete. Because if God is CEO of your business — and I believe He wants to be — then the most important thing you can do is learn to hear His voice in the decision-making process.

The Four Filters I Use

Over time, I've developed a framework for discerning God's direction in business decisions. I call it the four filters, and I run every major decision through them.

Filter 1: Scripture

Does this decision align with what God has already said in His Word? This is the baseline. If something contradicts Scripture, it's not God's direction, no matter how good the opportunity looks.

This filter eliminates a lot of noise. It keeps me from compromising my integrity for short-term gain.

Filter 2: Peace

Colossians 3:15 says, "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." The word "rule" here literally means "act as arbiter" or "umpire." Peace isn't just a nice feeling — it's a decision-making tool.

When I'm wrestling with a decision, I pay attention to my peace level. Not surface-level emotion, but deep, settled peace. If I feel a persistent unease that won't go away after prayer and wise counsel, I pay attention to that.

Filter 3: Confirmation

God rarely speaks in isolation. When He's directing me toward something, I usually see confirmation from multiple sources — a Scripture that keeps coming up, a conversation with a wise mentor, a circumstance that opens or closes a door.

I don't need a burning bush. But I do look for a pattern of confirmation before I move forward on major decisions.

Filter 4: Alignment with Calling

Does this decision move me closer to or further from what God has called me to do? Not every good opportunity is my opportunity. Sometimes the hardest part of discernment is saying no to something that's good but not mine.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Let me give you a real example. A while back, I was offered a partnership that looked incredible on paper. The money was good. The exposure was significant. The person was well-respected.

I ran it through my four filters:

• Scripture: Nothing in the deal contradicted God's Word.
• Peace: Here's where it got interesting. I had a persistent low-grade unease that I couldn't shake. It wasn't fear. It wasn't imposter syndrome. It was a quiet "not this."
• Confirmation: I shared the opportunity with two trusted mentors. Both independently said, "I don't have a specific reason, but I don't have peace about it either."
• Alignment: The partnership would have pulled my focus away from the core of what God has called me to do.

I said no. It was one of the hardest decisions I've made. And it was one of the best.

The Micro-Habit of Listening

Here's the thing — you don't learn to hear God's voice only when you're facing a big decision. You learn to hear it in the daily, small moments.

I practice a micro-habit I call "the pause." Before I respond to an email, before I commit to a meeting, before I make even small decisions, I pause for three seconds and ask, "Is this mine to do?"

Three seconds. That's it. But over time, that tiny habit has made me so much more attuned to God's direction in my business.

If you're thinking, "That sounds nice for you, but I don't hear God's voice like that," let me encourage you. This isn't a special gift. It's a practice. It's a muscle you build over time.

Start small. Start with the pause. Start with one decision a day where you intentionally invite God into the process.

He's not silent. You just might need to create enough quiet to hear Him.
